Actress and friend of the Chanel house, Julia Garner, brought 90s glam to the Academy Award season, stepping out at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party in a striking sculptural black gown. And her makeup followed suit.
Created by makeup artist Emily Cheng using Chanel Beauty, the Inventing Anna star’s makeup was as sculptural and captivating as Garner’s gown. We asked Cheng to share her inspiration behind the stunning look and how she got Garner’s cheekbones positively gleaming.
marie claire Australia: What was your inspiration for Julia Garner’s makeup look?
Emily Cheng: My inspiration was 90s neutral and sculptural glam. We wanted to play up the sculptural aspect of her dress’ ornate neck piece. The emphasis was on a sculpted face, so we focused on highlighting and contouring to achieve definition throughout the look.
MC: Julia’s skin looks insane, how did you get it glowing like that?
EC: We started with a mist of the Chanel Revitalizing Serum-In-Mist to waken the skin. I find that moisturising the skin tends to absorb better when the skin is softened. After that, I thoroughly massaged in the Chanel Rich Revitalizing Cream, focusing on the contours of the face, all over in a lymphatic motion to rid of any puffiness.
MC: What does prep work and massage do for skin?
EC: Spending time to massage allows the cream to penetrate and leave the skin perfectly moisturised for applying makeup. Make sure to massage and sweep downward to the collarbones. Finish the skincare prep with a generous application of Rouge Coco Baume Hydrating Conditioning Lip Balm.
MC: Those eyes are so 90s supermodel glam. Tell us how you achieved them.
EC: To get that soft sultry light smoky eye, I used the waterproof, but very blendable, CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense. Smudge the liner in between lashes and tightly above, then blend out with a brush. I also used the pencil to create a soft whispered wing. Once the waterproof eyeliner sets, it can stay on all day.
