Michaela Coel Gets SAG Award Nomination Following Controversial Golden Globes Snub

Plus, 'Bridgerton' and 'The Undoing' secure nods

Following the controversial list 2021 Golden Globe nominees released by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on February 4with series such as Emily in Paris awarded over critically-acclaimed dramas such as Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy Youit seemed award shows, once heralded reputations as true cultivators of the cultural zeitgeist, were keen to seal their fate as irrelevant.

On February 5, the SAG Awards released their official nominations for the 2021 show and thankfully, Coel was nominated in the Best Female Actor in a Limited Series category, alongside Cate Blanchett (Mrs America), Nicole Kidman (The Undoing), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).

Unlike the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which selects the Globes nominees. many members of the Screen Actors Guild are also members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AKA fellow actors) and will make up the largest branch of the Academy—meaning shows like the SAG Awards are usually precursors to who will win at the Academy Awards.

Twitter celebrated Coel’s nomination as a victory, with her 12-part series—that dives into and confronts the complexities of sexual assault based on her own experiences—was regarded as must-see viewing in 2021.

The nominations list also included a few surprises: Netflix’s mega-hit Bridgerton received a nom for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and Regé-Jean Page (The Duke of Hastings) was nominated for his Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.
