Just when we thought the Millennial film remake boom had reached its peak, news of a Bend It Like Beckham 2 being in the works proves that the best is yet to come.
The cult classic, starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley may have been released 23 years ago, but its cultural significance is just as relevant – if not more so – in 2025. At the time of the film’s release, support for women’s football – both in Britain and further afield – was barely a footnote in sports coverage, let alone a realistic career option for young players. But all that changed after its worldwide success was credited with inspiring an entire generation of women to take up the male-dominated sport.
“We’ve been part of changing the game for women, so it felt like this was a good time for me to go back and investigate the characters,” the film’s director, Gurinder Chadha told the BBC.
Confirming the sequel-related update, Chadha, told Deadline about her plans to evoke a similar sentiment for the modern day audience. “I’m excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women’s game.”

Will There Be A Bend It Like Beckham 2?
Yes! In good news for football fans and nostalgia-seekers everywhere, Bend It Like Beckham 2 is officially in the works.
Revealing the news ahead of the Women’s European Championship final in Basel, Switzerland, Chadha expressed her initial reluctance to revisit the beloved characters and storyline. That was, until now: “I didn’t want to do anything because I didn’t have a story. And then I came up with a great story, really super-cool story. So now I’m inspired. Literally came up with it just about a month ago.
“It’s my very clear wish to bring the characters back very,very soon.Women’s football is more competitive, more exciting, and more global than ever. It is an honour for me to be a small part of it.”
While there’s no word yet on whether Jonathan Rhys Meyers will be keen to lace up his boots for one final match, or, if David Beckham himself will be available for another iconic cameo, but something tells us it might be an offer too good to refuse.
Who Will Star In Bend It Like Beckham 2?
Obviously the film wouldn’t be the cult classic it is without its leading actors, Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, so we can rest easy knowing that both stars have expressed their enthusiasm to return for the sequel.
Chadha stated that both Nagra and Knightley, along with original cast members Archie Panjabi and Juliet Stevenson “are aware that a sequel is being developed but they obviously want to see a script before they commit.”
“I’m pretty certain that everyone’s going to want to come back,” she added. “Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.”
When Will The Bend It Like Beckham Sequel Be Released?
The goal, according to Chadha, is to align the sequel’s release with the 25th anniversary of the original film – which would be in 2027.
Not only will that date coincide with the milestone anniversary, but it would also match up with a huge year for the sport, with the FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament scheduled for June 24-July 25 that year.
A happy coincidence indeed.
