In huge news for anyone who’s still hopelessly devoted to Olivia Newton-John (us included), a documentary about the life of the late singer and actress will be coming to Netflix.
Announced today, the documentary is set to explore “the music, life, and magic of beloved pop star and cultural phenom Olivia Newton-John,” per Deadline. “In her own words, through vivid archival and via reminiscences from close friends and collaborators, we’ll follow Olivia’s journey as the world falls madly in love with her and she ascends to the height of fame, only to be confronted by challenges of epic proportions.”
Newton-John first rose to fame in the early 1970s when she appeared on the Australian talent show Sing, Sing, Sing which won her a trip to the UK for her musical prowess. In 1971, she released her first solo album, If Not For You, but it was in 1974 when I Honestly Love You hit the charts, that she was set on her path to superstardom.
Of course, there’s no denying the cultural impact of Grease, in which her role as sweet Sandy catapulted her into the Hollywood hall of fame and cemented her icon status forever more.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Newton-John dedicated much of her life to fundraising and promoting cancer research. Throughout her 60 years in public life, encompassing everything from a mysteriously missing boyfriend to battles with Stage 4 cancer, her glowing reputation never faltered. “Love and light” was not just what she’d sign off every address and statement she’d make, it was truly her life motto – and one she never veered from.
What Is The Olivia Newton-John Netflix Documentary About?

Produced by This Machine’s R.J. Cutler – whose credits include Apple TV’s Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, Elton John: Never Too Late and Martha Stewart’s Netflix documentary, the Newton-John project will be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Nicole Newnham.
Per Netflix, “This is the story of a woman who was perpetually underestimated despite her mesmerizing talent, ultimately silencing her detractors by pushing through phenomenal loss and pain with grace and gratitude,” the release notes. “By discovering how to stay true to her beliefs, Olivia changed our culture for the better, bending it towards kindness, inclusivity, and love.”
In a statement shared with Deadline, director Nicole Newnham said, “Olivia always signed her letters ‘love and light’ and that is the shimmering and hopeful legacy she has left us. As a young girl, I fell in love with her, listening to Grease on the record player on repeat. But this unique filmmaking journey – deep into the archives and into the amazing community of Olivia’s close friends and family – has revealed a complex and extraordinary woman whose impact on the world is still rippling outwards.”
At this stage, there’s no release date, but we’ll keep the updates coming as soon as they’re announced.
