Georg Jensen’s New Fold Collection Turns Paper Into Polished Steel

Where paper meets polish

Some of the most memorable designs begin with the simplest ideas. For Georg Jensen’s newest home collection, Fold, that starting point is a sheet of paper: gently bent and curved into an unexpected three-dimensional form.

Launching in Australia on September 24, the collection translates paper’s natural movement into mirror-polished stainless steel. Smooth planes curl around each object to create fluid, asymmetrical silhouettes that appear strikingly light despite the solidity of the material.

The inaugural release comprises three vases of varying heights and a set of two tealight candle holders. Naturally, each piece has enough presence to stand alone, but in this case, more is more. See all three vases together and you’ll want the whole set. Grouped across a dining table, sideboard or mantelpiece, their different shapes and proportions create a dramatic sculptural landscape.

Of course, this signature balance of beauty and function is an idea that has defined Georg Jensen since the house was founded in Copenhagen in 1904. Born in 1866 and raised amid the natural landscape of Raadvad, north of Copenhagen, Georg Jensen dreamed of becoming an artist. He trained as a sculptor and ceramist and completed an apprenticeship as a goldsmith before finding his greatest success as a silversmith.

His work rejected the ornate, historicist decoration popular at the time. Instead, Jensen embraced the organic shapes and craft-led principles of Art Nouveau, combining natural forms with a progressive approach to design. His ability to unite artistry with everyday usefulness helped shape what would become recognised around the world as Scandinavian design.

Yet Jensen also understood the value of another perspective. He invited artists, jewellers, designers and fellow craftspeople into his studio, establishing a collaborative culture that became central to the company’s identity. By the time of his death in 1935, his Copenhagen workshop was considered one of the world’s most important silversmithies, celebrated for its jewellery, tableware, hollowware and cutlery.

More than a century later, Fold feels like a natural continuation of that legacy. Its pared-back forms are contemporary, but the collection retains the organic movement, technical precision and respect for materials that characterised Jensen’s original work.

The campaign was photographed at The Paper Foundation in Burneside, a village in England’s Lake District where papermaking has been part of local life since the 18th century. Founded by sixth-generation papermaker Mark Cropper, the organisation preserves the traditional process of making paper entirely by hand.

Designed with entertaining in mind, the pieces’ varying heights make an impact without blocking the view across the table. Because nothing kills a good conversation quite like a peony between you and your guest. Yet the pieces feel just as relevant beyond special occasions. A single vase can elevate an everyday bunch of flowers, while the tealight holders add warmth to a relaxed dinner at home.

Fold is the first instalment in a collection that will expand over time with further objects for everyday living.
