Netflix’s The Crown Will Have A Completely New Cast After Season 2

Don't worry, there's a good reason for all this...

We’ve got an update on your new favourite binge-watch Netflix series The Crown.

All the cast members you know and love – Claire Foy’s Queen Elizabeth, Matt Smith’s Prince Philip, Vanessa Kirby’s Princess Margaret – will be replaced after season two, making way for a brand new cast in season three.

Foy, the show’s star, broke the news to New York magazine, saying “After two season, that’s it, I’m gone. I don’t [know] how they’re planning on doing it, but they’re such an incredible bunch of directors and producers that it’s gonna be different and exciting.”

It’s part of Netflix’s six year plan for the royal drama, exploring different decades in the life of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Because of the scope of the series, covering sixty years in the life of the royal family, the casting will need to change.

It’s not because fans haven’t fallen in love with the stars. The show recently scored three Golden Globe nominations, including one for Foy and John Lithgow for Best Supporting Actor. (The pair also were nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards).

The first season of The Crown follows the life of Queen Elizabeth after her wedding in 1947 and events that occurred during the early part of her reign. The Crown‘s showrunner, Peter Morgan has talked about how the royal family are “very, very aware of the Netflix series”.

“I think Netflix are working on getting [The Queen] to give an endorsement [to show],” Peter said. “Through untraceable back channels, countless approaches have been made.”

The Crown season two will air on Netflix in 2017. Season one streams on Netflix now.
