8 Famous Brides Who Channelled Old Hollywood On Their Wedding Day

Nostalgia can be the best component of any wedding.

The sheer amount of options when picking out a wedding dress can be daunting—and as with many brides, it can be easier to follow the bridal trends of the moment, instead of wearing something timeless.

But while plenty of contemporary brides will opt for something “simple” (seriously, though—”simple wedding dress” was the most-searched term on Pinterest by Australian brides in 2019), others will take a glance back at more frivolous historical trends in order to get inspired.

For celebrities, the trend du jour seems to be as retro as possible, with brides like Zoë Kravitz, Miranda Kerr, Princess Eugenie and even Kate Moss sampling retro silhouettes for their striking modern-day wedding gowns.

Scroll down for the most noteworthy celebrities who channelled Old Hollywood on their wedding days—whether explicitly intended, or completely by chance.

Miranda Kerr in Dior When Kerr married Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel in 2017, she wore this divine sleeved gown, designed bespoke by Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The supermodel later revealed that it was inspired by Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, from her 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco.

Princess Eugenie in Zac Posen Though Princess Eugenie wore Peter Pilotto for her October 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle, her post-wedding party involved this divine peach-coloured gown by American designer Zac Posen. Like Miranda Kerr, Eugenie’s gown was also based on a style once worn by Grace Kelly, with the princess revealing: “I wanted something reminiscent of Grace Kelly in [the Alfred Hitchcock film] To Catch a Thief, so I showed that for reference.”

Ellie Goulding in Chloé Goulding married contemporary art dealer Caspar Jopling in September 2019, and wore a Chloé gown by the brand’s creative director, Natacha Ramsay-Levi. Fashion enthusiasts were quick to notice that the gown almost identically resembled Audrey Hepburn’s Balmain wedding dress, from her 1954 wedding to actor Mel Ferrer.

Charlotte Casiraghi in Giambattista Valli Couture Unlike many brides, Charlotte Casiraghi actually has Old Hollywood lineage (her grandmother is none other than Grace Kelly). Though the Monégasque princess’s gown from her 2019 wedding was actually modelled off the wedding dress of her mother, Princess Caroline, it had a distinctly Old Hollywood feel.

Kate Moss in John Galliano Moss’s gown, designed by her close friend John Galliano, was strikingly simple, and hearkened back to an even older era of Old Hollywood style. The supermodel’s look resembled the flapper dress aesthetic of the ’20s and ’30s, which was made more contemporary by the low neckline and Moss’s free-flowing waves.

Pippa Middleton in Giles Deacon Pippa Middleton’s highly-anticipated wedding gown was less conservative than her sister, Kate Middleton’s dress—but the high neck, understated diamond headpiece, and long veil gave the impression that Middleton was channeling the vibe of an old-school bride.
