Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Thomas Shelby in a Peaky Blinders movie.
The show’s creator, Steven Knight, confirmed the news in an interview with Birmingham World at the premiere for his new show, This World.
“He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.” Knight said.
The British period crime drama, which stars Murphy as notorious gang leader Tommy Shelby, released its sixth and final season in 2022. While a feature film has always been intended to follow the beloved series, a lack of word on the release date did make many fans give up hope.
However, fans grew excited in September whe the show’s official account posting a cryptic Instagram message about the future of the series.
To mark the 10-year anniversary of Peaky Blinders season one, the show’s social media accounts shared a quote from Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight, saying “the story is not yet over”.
“It hardly seems believable that it’s 10 years since Tommy Shelby first rode that black horse through the streets of Birmingham,” Knight wrote.
“The phenomenal global success of the show is down to the brilliance and hard work of the loyal team that makes it happen. Ten years on and the story is not yet over. Watch this space.”
Similarly, in Knight’s TRIC Award acceptance speech, which he won Best Drama for Peaky Blinders, he said:
“We could never have predicted how much this series about Birmingham gangsters in the ’20s and ’30s would resonate.”
“Some things just seem to have momentum and luck, and they stick, and everyone working on them feels that. What is coming next? It’s to be announced. But it’s not the end.”
He also recently told the BBC he was considering a spin-off series, when he said: “I think after the film, we will look at [it].”
“It would be me sort of launching possible new stories into the ’50s, and then I would hand over the baton of writing and creating the thing to other people.”
He continued: “But if there is an appetite for the world, then it will continue.”
What Will The Peaky Blinders Movie Be About?
It’s understood that the new film will take the place of a seventh season, and pick up where he series left off.
In 2022, Murphy opened up about how the story was left in the series.
“I think Steve has always had an endgame in mind. Covid screwed that up a bit. But now he’s got lots of plans to make a film.
“So I don’t think this is the end of the story. I think it’s probably just the end of the story in this form.
“But Steve is always bringing up ideas, and they’re always good. So I’ll just wait and see what he has to say.”
