1: Read the magazine
The current issue and at least two back issues so you know what we’ve reported on before
2: Include up to three ideas max
Quality over quantity

3: Keep it short and sweet
Three paragraphs, max.
Write it in the tone you’d write the story; no half-formed thoughts, brain dumps or “just thinking out loud”s
Include:
- A catchy headline
- Why it’s right for marie claire instead of another publication
- Why now?
- The expert voices and case studies you’d include
4: Send the pitch in the body of an email
No attachments, PDFs, Pages docs or live links
5: Have talent secured before pitching a profile
If we say yes and then they say no, that’s bad for everyone
6: Stay away from TikTok/social media trends or thinkpieces about something that’s happening online right now
We work three to six months ahead, so if it’s happening now it’s already over

7: Have print experience
At least two years experience writing for print publications full-time or freelance; please tell us where you’ve worked and include writing samples
8: Keep it professional
If we haven’t worked with you or met you before, introduce yourself without being overly familiar (please no ‘Hey lady’ or ‘Hey gf’ if we don’t know each other … or even then)
9: Don’t follow up too soon or too often
If you don’t hear from us, one friendly follow-up email a fortnight later is enough. If the piece is timely and needs a more urgent response, please put ‘Timely pitch’ in your subject line
10: No pitches for hotel reviews
