The May 2021 Super Blood Moon is taking place at approximately 9.13pm tonight AEST. Despite the scary-sounding name, it’s actually a very cool experience that sees a huge moon glow a beautiful red colour. It’s actually the closest the moon will get to Earth for the entire year, so if you’re not planning to have a look up at the sky later, you might want to reconsider.
We spoke with astrologer Emma Vidgen to learn a bit more about the Super Blood Moon and what makes it so special. She also told us that some star signs in particular may feel its effect more than others, so it’s really important to take note of your rising sign.
“If your rising sign (sometimes referred to as the Ascendant) is in Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces you will find this eclipse more powerful as it triggers big changes around identity, home/family, relationships and career. In addition to these rising signs, if you have your sun in Sagittarius and Gemini this eclipse could also feel a bit more powerful,” Emma said.
If your rising sign hasn’t been listed as one of the signs to be most impacted, that doesn’t mean you won’t feel the force of the Super Blood Moon. Emma explains what the event can still mean for the rest of us.
“Eclipses always happen in pairs and this one is wrapping a story line that’s been unfolding in all of our lives since mid-December 2020. Because it’s happening on the south node, it’s main theme is releasing old baggage. Sagittarius is all about finding your own personal truth, so this eclipse is about letting go of old belief systems that no longer serve you.”
What things should we be doing during the Super Blood Moon?
“Generally speaking, eclipses are a time of often rapid change. People might literally be ‘eclipsed’ out of your life abruptly – e.g. your work wife gets a new job and gets walked the second she resigns. With the south node in Sagittarius, on a collective level, it’s calling for us to look at where we have become too attached to outdated belief systems and ideas that there is only one true approach/perspective/philosophy. It’s about letting go of a need to always be “right” or have the final say. It’s also a time of powerful intuition so pay attention if you’re getting random pings about an issue that’s been weighing on your mind.
Eclipses aren’t to be feared. Think of them as a cosmic mindfulness bell to just stop, relax and watch what unfolds. Quit hustling and set aside time to reflect on what old ideas (or habits, or people) you’re ready to release. You don’t have to “do” anything, just trust what’s meant to go, will go.
Because it’s happening on the south node, there is this theme of clearing out and so you might find yourself inspired to do a huge wardrobe purge or reorganise your pantry. Just go with it! Trust your gut and let your intuition guide you. The worst thing you could so is overthink things right now with Mercury slowing down to station retrograde this weekend, it’s a time to trust your instinct rather than try and rationalise.
Finally, the ruler of this moon is Jupiter (which is currently loving life in the sign of Pisces). This gives this moon a flavour of hope. If people or things do make a sudden exit, trust that they weren’t meant to come with you on the next part of your journey. Have faith their absence is making room for something better.”
