Charges have been filed against a Memphis woman, who allegedly stabbed four of her children to death on Friday. She was identified by police as twenty-nine-year-old Shanynthia Gardner on Saturday and taken into custody.

Four of her children, including her four-year-old boy, and three daughters aged three years old, two years old and six months old, were found dead when police arrived at the scene. Police found a butcher’s knife covered in blood, and ‘severe lacerations to the throat’.

Her seven-year-old son, Dallen Clayton, fled the apartment and escaped unharmed, and has been taken into protective custody.

Since the events, the Daily Mail has reported that the grandmother of the children has spoken out, saying Gardner was a ‘sweet young lady’. Sonya Clayton, Gardner’s ex mother-in-law, said that she ‘doesn’t understand’ what happened.

“I know this is the work of the devil,’ Clayton said. ‘I know this is not Shanynthia. And I pray and I love Shanynthia.”

She will face court on Tuesday.
