It’s not Miley Cyrus‘ first comment storm. Currently, the singer is actively promoting her new Mother’s Daughter music video, and some of the wording and imagery has caused major furore in the comments.
A message flashes across the screen and has been reproduced on Cyrus’ feed, reading: “Virginity is a social construct”. Unsurprisingly, people had thoughts about the statement, most of which were negative.
It was the “social construct” part of the message that really stung fans, with many claiming it was a blatant attack on choosing to maintain one’s virginity.

“There’s nothing wrong with being a virgin,” as one commenter wrote. “There’s something very wrong with people who think being a virgin is a problem.” Others proceeded to tell Cyrus to “respect people’s choices” and even went so far as to accuse her of “shaming” virgins.
“Honestly you shouldn’t be posting stuff like that. You should respect people’s choices and respect the fact you have a young audience too. It’s not okay to shame people that chose to stay a virgin.”

However, as some of her defenders reiterated, Cyrus was likely addressing the fact that women shouldn’t be punished or slut-shamed for “choosing to do what they want with their own body.”
One commenter wrote, “Miley is saying women should have a damn choice and shouldn’t be punished for choosing to do what they want with their own body.”
Cyrus is yet to respond to criticism.
