Things have reportedly been awry within Miley Cyrus‘ family for some time, with a reported rift between the children having began when parents, Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus, divorced (for the third time) in 2022. As both parties moved onto new relationships, rumours their children—they share Miley, Noah and Braison; and Billy Ray adopted Tish’s kids from a previous relationship, Brandi and Trace—have picked sides have run rife in tabloids. With claims ranging from wedding snubs to a full on mother-daughter love triangle (yes, really), the whole feud has become as complex as it is dramatic.

April 2022: Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus Divorce
After 30 years of marriage, in April 2022 Tish and Billy Ray announced they were getting divorced—for the third time. The couple had previously filed for divorce in 2010 and 2013 but ultimately rekindled their relationship. However, this time they were separating for good.
In a joint statement to People, Tish and Billy Ray wrote: “It is after 30 years, five amazing children and a lifetime of memories, we have decided to go our separate ways—not with sadness, but with love in our hearts.”
“We have grown up together, raised a family we can be so proud of, and it is now time to create our own paths. We will always be family and look forward to a continued and loving shared experience as friends and parents,” they added. “We have not come to this decision lightly or quickly but with so much going on in the world, we wanted to provide some clarity and closure, so we can remain focused on what is important.”
The statement did not indicate any drama however, Tish would later claim there was plenty behind the scenes… but more on that ahead.
August 2022: Billy Ray Gets Engaged
Four months after announcing his split from Tish, Billy Ray was engaged!
The country singer was set to tie the knot with fellow musician, Firerose (real name Johanna Rose Hodges), who was 34 at the time.
Billy Ray later told People that the pair had been friends for years for 12 years since first meeting on the set of Hannah Montana. He added that there were “no hard feelings” within his family regarding his new fiancée.
A month later, Noah seemingly showed support for her dad. The youngest member of the family called her dad her “hero and inspiration” in an Instagram comment. She was replying to a post Billy Ray had made about ‘Noah (Stand Still),’ a song they had collaborated on for Noah’s debut album. The singer found inspiration for the track when visiting her dad’s Nashville home, while she was recovering from a Xanax addiction.
Late 2022: Dominic Purcell Enters The Picture
According to a 2024 interview on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, Tish met her now-husband, Dominic Purcell, via Instagram.
She direct-messaged the Prison Break actor and they began dating shortly after. It is not entirely clear when this was. Two years on, reports would emerge that Dominic was also casually dating Tish’s daughter, Noah at the time as well.
A source told US Weekly that Noah “was not Dominic’s ex” and, “[Noah and Dominic] were seeing each other when he started dating Tish.” The tabloid also claimed that Miley was “fully aware” of her sister’s relationship with Dominic.
August 2023: Tish Marries Dominic Purcell—And Rumours Of A Cyrus Family Rift Begin
In August 2023, Tish and Dominic wed in a small ceremony at Miley’s Malibu home.
This is where rumours of a rift went public, thanks to two of Tish’s children being noticeably absent from her nuptials.
It appears that only three of Tish’s children—Trace, Brandi and Miley—were in attendance.
On the day of the wedding, Noah shared a selfie to her Instagram story, in which she wore a Billy Ray T-shirt. She appeared to be at a café with her brother, Braison.
October 2023: Billy Ray Marries Firerose
Tish may have beaten him down the aisle, but Billy Ray and Firerose tied the knot in October 2023.
In a since-deleted Instagram post, the couple wrote: “10/10/23 will always be the beautiful, joyous day that our two souls united as one in holy matrimony.”
“It was the most perfect, ethereal celebration of love we could have ever imagined. For both of us to hear the preacher say, ‘Billy Ray and Firerose Cyrus . . . I now pronounce you husband and wife’ that was the sacred moment our new forever began. Long Live Love!”
The wedding appeared to be a small one and seemingly, none of the Cyrus children were in attendance.
October 2023: Noah Calls Out Miley… Publicly
In October, a clip of Miley discussing her relationship with alcohol on he Joe Rogan Experience began doing the rounds on social media.
When asked about Noah growing up with a famous sister and seeing what had happened to her, Miley told the podcast host: “You can go one way or another, right? You either become my little sister who kind of wants it…” before describing her sister’s EP as “depressing” and Noah herself as “emo.”
Noah commented on the clip, “the disrespect in this video…”

February 2024: Miley Excludes Her Dad From Her Grammys Speech
After a brief lull in the Cyrus family drama, rumours bubbled back up following the 2024 Grammys.
In her acceptance speech for Record of the Year, which she won for her hit ‘Flowers,’ Miley thanked Tish and her sister Brandi. Whether or not it was targeted remains unclear, but Miley neglected to include a nod to her dad or other siblings. At the end of her speech, she noted that she didn’t think she had forgotten anyone.
February 2024: Reports Emerge That Noah Formerly Dated Tish’s Husband
It was after the Grammys that those aforementioned reports of Tish pinching Dominic from Noah first emerged.
In addition to Us Weekly’s claims, a source told People, “Noah and Dominic were seeing each other in a friends with benefits way, off and on. They stopped seeing each other and then Tish started something up.” They added, “Tish knew he had been seeing Noah.”
February 2024: Tish Opens Up About Divorce
For the first time, Tish opened up publicly about her divorce from Billy Ray during an interview, alongside Brandi, on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast.
During the conversation, she told Cooper that her and Billy Ray’s relationship “had not been in a good place for a long time” and that she stayed with him “out of fear of being alone.”
She also claimed that she put up with “disrespect in every form” throughout their 30-year-relationship, and likened herself to being a single parent during the years Billy Ray was acting on Hannah Montana.
“I literally had the choice to leave them with a nanny and let them go to school or take them with me and have them do it on [set]. Which is what I chose to do,” she told Cooper. “It was not easy. … I just made it work and I took the kids.”
Brandi also weighed in, explaining how she had seen her parent’s relationship change over the years.
“I’ll never forget, I was 25 and I was filming a movie in New York and he was there doing Broadway. It was, kind of, the first time that it opened my eyes to see some of the things that he was doing that I didn’t know before,” Brandi recalled, steering away from specifics. “It was hurtful to see him doing it to her. It was hurtful to see him hiding it from me.”
She later clarified, “I never first-hand saw anything go down, by any means, but tried to be a peacemaker.”
May 2024: Things Appear Fine Between Noah and Tish
Despite reports from March that “Miley believes the family rift is beyond repair at this time,” by May, things were looking up.
On May 13, Noah wished her mum a happy birthday on Instagram Stories, sharing a sweet throwback snap of the pair together. Tish later posted a message of congratulations to the app after Noah singed with agency IMG Models.
May 2024: Billy Ray Files For Divorce (Again)
The latest? Billy Ray is getting divorced again.
Less than a year after their wedding, the singer filed for divorce from Firerose citing “irreconcilable differences” and “inappropriate marital conduct.”
Billy Ray is asking their marriage be annulled on the grounds of fraud, per TMZ.
