Over the weekend, Macklemore ignited a political furore after declaring “Free Palestine” onstage at an Ed Sheeran concert in New Jersey, following a performance of his protest anthem “Hind’s Hall”, which was accompanied by projected imagery of Gaza.

Since then, the rapper has faced backlash from P!nk and various pro-Israel groups, renewing scrutiny of how artists use their platforms for political speech.

What Did Macklemore Say At Ed Sheeran’s Concert?

Macklemore is currently opening for Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour, and on Friday, September 4, he told the crowd he wanted people in Gaza and the West Bank to know they had not been forgotten, declaring: “I believe that every human being walking on this earth deserves exactly the same freedom.”

Since then, the Israeli American Council have launched a petition calling for him to be removed from the remaining dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour.

The petition reads, in part: “This was an Ed Sheeran concert – not a political rally, not a protest, and not an activist event. The issue is not whether Macklemore has the right to hold political views. The question is where the line should be drawn when an opening act uses a global concert platform to advance a one-sided political agenda. This becomes even more troubling when the message relies on selective imagery, biased messaging, and disputed claims presented to a massive audience as fact, without context or complexity.”

What Did Pink Say About Macklemore?

The 47-year-old singer reshared a post to her Instagram Story from @stop_antisemitism, which called out Macklemore’s “anti-Israel propaganda.”

The original post’s caption reads: “Awful – Jewish fans bought tickets to see Ed Sheeran sing last night in NJ, not to be ambushed by Macklemore’s anti-Israel propaganda. Instead, Macklemore walked onstage in a keffiyeh, shouted “Free Palestine,” accused Israel of a false “genocide,” and turned a mainstream event into a political nightmare against the Jewish state.”

The caption also called for Ed Sheeran to apologise: “Concert goers are owed apologies and refunds @teddysphotos – this is unacceptable.”

Has Ed Sheeran Commented On Macklemore’s Remarks?

So far, Sheeran has not addressed the controversy. Macklemore remains listed as support for Sheeran’s upcoming U.S. tour dates and there has been no public indication that he plans to remove Macklemore from the tour.
