Miley Cyrus has just made a statement following the death of her beloved godmother, Dolly Parton.
On August 27, Miley shared a heartfelt tribute to Instagram, reflecting on their close bond.
“The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. Our most sacred moments were private and they’ll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts.”
She continued, “What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong. I have an angel by my side. I always have. One of our last conversations was about music and metamorphosis.”
It was revealed that Parton had passed away at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer.
Cyrus concluded her statement by saying, “I will always love her and want to make her proud. My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply. We’re in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things.”
The news of Parton’s death was announced by her nephew Bryan Seaver, who also served as her long time head of security.
Cyrus shared a close bond with her godmother, who was chosen for the special role by Billy Ray Cyrus following his tour with the “Jolene” singer back in 1992.
Miley and Dolly performed together multiple times over the years, including on The Voice in 2016, when Cyrus was a judge on the show, and at the 2019 Grammys. They also rang in the New Year together in 2023 as cohosts of the second annual Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party.
Parton also starred as “Aunt Dolly” on Hannah Montana, making cameos in seasons 1, 2 and 4.
Speaking toVanity Fair in November 2020 about her role, Parton recalled “[Miley] said ‘I want my Aunt Dolly on here … I want her on the show,’ so they wrote me in the show, and we just worked so great together.”
She continued, “Thanks to her I had a whole new following of people that were turned on to me, these young little kids that were her fans…I really loved the time that we spent with her, doing the show.”
She added, “I was watching her like a proud momma…I’ve always been proud of Miley, she’s so talented.”
Under Miley’s touching tribute post, fans and celebrities flooded the comments with messages of love and condolences. Donatella Versace shared a particularly heartfelt message, writing, “Miley, I know this loss will be so hard for you. Dolly was a godmother to us all and we will all miss her 🕊️🤍 I am sending you the most love 🤍🕊️.”
Katy Perry also shared her support, writing, “Been thinking about you since I heard the news. Love you very much.”
