Dolly Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, has confirmed the country music legend has died, aged 80.
The celebrated singer-songwriter, whose extraordinary career spanned more than six decades, leaves behind a formidable cultural legacy, garnering 11 Grammys, three Emmys, six Golden Globes, a Tony, and an honorary humanitarian Oscar. News of her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans, celebrities and admirers around the world.
Among the many famous names to pay tribute to Dolly are Oprah, Kacey Musgraves, Sabrina Carpenter, Jane Fonda, Kelly Clarkson, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Ray Cyrus, Colman Domingo and Khloe Kardashian.
Parton’s death comes after a string of postponements and cancellations in recent months. Last September, she postponed a run of Las Vegas concerts, citing “some health challenges.”
In May, she also cancelled her Las Vegas residency, reassuring fans at the time via an Instagram post while she is “responding really well to meds and treatments” and is “improving every day”, it would be a little while before she was “stage-performance level”.
In a statement to People, a representative for the star confirmed that her death followed a “brief battle with cancer.”
Carpenter, who collaborated with Parton in her music video for “Please Please Please,” shared a lengthy tribute for the beloved singer.

“oh dolly💔the only thing i could say after we first met was ‘she really is an angel walking the earth’ and ‘we look like we could be sisters!’” she wrote.
“i will cherish our laughter and conversations and i will keep your wisdom, your playful outlook on life, and perfect sense of humor in my pocket for the rainy days. there will never be another you and how lucky are we all to have experienced your singular magic as well as your once in a lifetime voice, songs, and heart. your light will be something the world will search forever to find again,” she wrote. “i will always love you.”
Parton’s 9-5 co-star Jane Fonda also shared a tribute.
“I am devastated. I just learned that Dolly has moved on. I know that millions are mourning and I want to say this — more than anyone I have ever known, Dolly will always be with us because she was so present, so powerful, so generous and playful that she is woven into all our lives and hearts forever,” she wrote in part on Instagram
“I never knew anyone like her. She was simultaneously a naughty, playful southern gal from the hollows of Tennessee and a deep, soulful thinker who could see through people right down to their true selves. She was many things…lyricist, songstress, player of many instruments, writer, prankster, visionary, loyal friend, who’d never go to bed before she and her friends had laughed so hard they’d have to cross their legs.”
Kelly Clarkson also posted a statement on Instagram, saying, “Dolly Parton had a way of making everyone feel special, and seen, and welcomed, and as if you were old friends. I will miss her heart and her voice as I am sure millions will. What an incredible gift and talent she was and still is with an amazing catalogue of art she has left behind for all of us.”
