Vanessa Kirby And Shia LaBeouf’s ‘Pieces Of A Woman’ Explores The Heartbreaking Reality Of Baby Loss

The deeply personal and searing film is based on the creators' personal experiences

The first trailer for Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf’s Pieces of a Woman has finally arrived, and the latest Netflix drama is delving passionately into the heart-wrenching experience of baby loss.

The film follows Martha (Kirby) and Sean (LaBeouf), a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably when a home birth ends in unimaginable tragedy. What follows is a year-long odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn).

The movie also follows the legal fallout of the failed at home birth at the hands of a confused midwife, who faces charges of criminal negligence.

Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, written by Kata Wéber and produced by Martin Scorsese, Pieces of a Woman, while heartbreaking to watch, provides an intimate look to the reality of losing a child—showcasing how that grief manifests itself even years later and the significant toll it can take on relationships.

The film, a deeply personal, searing and transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss, is based on Wéber and Mundruczó’s shared personal experience, serving as the pair’s first English-language feature.

Pieces of a Woman lands in select cinemas on December 30 and on Netflix on January 7, 2021.
