Queen Elizabeth Confirms Camilla Will Be The ‘Queen Consort’ When Charles Becomes King

Her majesty made an official request at her Platinum Jubilee.

On February 6, Queen Elizabeth not only celebrated her highly-anticipated Platinum Jubliee but she also took the chance to address the future of the monarchy after she departs.

While celebrating the 70th anniversary of her reign—and expertly cutting a rather huge cake—Her Majesty officially declared her support of Camilla Parker Bowles, announcing that she will be known as ‘Queen Consort’ or ‘Queen Camilla’ when Prince Charles takes the throne.

Of course, Queen Elizabeth reassured the world that she has no plans to depart her role anytime soon, she did mention that she is looking forward “to continuing to serve you with all my heart”, as per CNN.

But what does Queen Consort mean? Well, when Charles eventually becomes King, The Duchess of Cornwall‘s new title will see her as a consort, which refers to the partner of a ruling monarch. It’s important to note that the Queen is the only one who can assign said royal titles.

“When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me,” Queen Elizabeth said in a statement, as per The Washington Post.

“And it is my sincere wish that, when that times comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”

In response to her request, Prince Charles welcomed his mother’s wish and the pair thanked her publicly for her support.

A statement to the Clarence House Twitter read that he and his wife were “deeply conscious of the honour”.

“The Queen’s devotion to the welfare of all her people inspires still greater admiration with each passing year. We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother’s wish,” the statement said.

“As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.”

Naturally, the public aren’t too pleased with the Queen’s decision over Camilla’s future title. Married in 2005, Camilla and Charles have always had a turbulent history with the world. Until now, it was believed that Camilla would hold a ‘Princess Consort’ title when Charles becomes King, in respect of the late Princess Diana who would have held the Queen title.

As we know, the Princess of Wales was killed in a car crash in 1997, breaking the hearts of millions. The tragedy happened after years of public turmoil from Charles and Camilla’s romantic relationship during his marriage to Diana.

However, thanks to the Queen’s recent announcement, it’s clear that Her Majesty wants the public to accept Camilla as a serious member of the royal family, after years of scrutiny. Royals fans have previously blamed Camilla for the breakdown of Diana and Charles’ marriage, especially after Diana’s infamous 1995 interview where she said that “there were three of us in this marriage”.

Since becoming a royal, Camilla has worked tirelessly to improve how the public views her. Aside from becoming a patron to approximately 100 different charities and organisations, the Duchess of Cornwall has also advocated for literacy and campaigns against domestic violence.
