Sarah Michelle Gellar Apologises For Sharing A Triggering 'Thinspiration' Post On Instagram

Hitting back: “I am a champion of all people” - by Arielle Tsoukatos
  • 21 Nov 2018

Sarah Michelle Gellar has responded to the criticism which erupted on social media after she posted photos of herself in black lingerie as "a reminder not to overeat.”

In preparation for the American holiday Thanksgiving, Gellar shared these images from a December 2017 Maxim shoot. “I’m just going to pin these up all over my house as a reminder not to overeat on Thursday,” the Buffy The Vampire Slayer star wrote in the caption, adding the hashtag #thanksgivingprep.

While come of the 41-year-old’s peers in the industry - including Debra Messing and Tiffani Thiessen - praised Gellar’s physique, other followers were less impressed.

One user commented: “Wow. Really shocked that a woman in a position of influence and a mother would post this … Is that where you place your value? On the size of your thighs? Or your protruding hip bones? Nothing positive comes from this post. Only narcissism and [the] theory that women need to be skinny to be acceptable. You should remove this post. Immediate unfollow from me.”

Following the barrage of criticism over this blatant “thinspiration,” Sarah shared the following apology on Tuesday.

“That could not be further from my intentions. I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to me not to do that. I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humour. Anyone that knows me, knows I would never intentionally ‘shame’ anyone on any basis. I am a champion of all people."
