Deborra-Lee Furness officially filed for divorce from ex-husband Hugh Jackman nearly two-years after the couple’s shock split was first announced.
Just a day later, Jackman has reportedly responded, seemingly “blindsided” by his ex-wife’s comments to the press. According to a report published in The Daily Mail, an anonymous source claiming to be close to Jackman revealed that he was “extremely disappointed” by the remarks, nothing there was “an unwritten understanding that she would not trash him to the press.” Adding that Jackman “knows that he cannot change anything.”
The response comes after Deborra-Lee Furness issued a searing statement at the same time as the final divorce filings became public.
“My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal,” Deborra-Lee revealed in a statement sent to Daily Mail. “It’s a profound wound that cuts deep, however I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working FOR us,” she added.
The comments were shared just days after Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster were spotted walking hand-in-hand (again) on the streets of New York, prompting rumours of a permanent relocation to the Big Apple for the Wolverine star.
Seemingly addressing the questions surrounding the newly-minted couple, Furness continued: “This believe has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage. I have gained much knowledge and wisdom through this experience. Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose.”
On September 15, 2023, the couple released a joint statement about their separation saying, “We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
Since then, the former-couple have faced a slew of speculation around the real reason behind their divorce, with many pointing to Jackman’s relationship with Sutton Foster as a driving force of the decision.
She concluded her statement with a focus on the future, outlining her intention to remain grateful for the lessons learnt, admitting that while the pain is undeniable, the path forward is all about “returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries.” A teaching that Furness likened to “liberation and freedom.”

While initial reports predicted that their divorce “could get messy”, according to insiders, it’s been anything but. According to filings submitted in New York by Furness’ lawyer, Elena Karabatos, the details of the divorce remain uncontested, with the former couple seeking an amicable end to their decades-long relationship.
“A settlement was reached that Deborra is pleased with which includes a handsome spousal support payment,” an insider reportedly shared with Daily Mail. “They have worked out the details in advance and everything is ironed out in terms of a settlement, alimony and the expenses for the future of their children,” the source revealed.
The former couple, who married in April 1996, share two children Oscar, 24, and Ava, 19, are to remain focused on co-parenting as their main priority moving forward – something they’ve always been adamant about maintaining.
In a statement shared at the time of their separation, both parties had expressed their mutual wish to keep a family-first approach to the next chapter of their lives apart. “Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”
Whatever the outcome, it’s clear that both Jackman and Furness are ready to move onto the next stage of their lives, with Deborra Lee recently telling the Herald Sun: “I’m in my chapter three. I’m a creative, I love being creative in a variety of areas, and i think i’ll be doing more travelling.”
