Since the whole catsuit-gate of 2018, we’ve been waiting with bated breath to see what Serena Williams would do next, fashion wise. Now, the time has come — and she really hasn’t disappointed.
Playing in Melbourne at the Australian Open this week, the tennis superstar opted for a turquoise green romper during her match against Tatjana Maria, which she won. Aside from giving us serious Bring It On vibes, Williams’s outfit had one detail which really stood out: she was wearing fishnet stockings.
Yep, the queen of tennis wore fishnet tights on court — and it was amazing.
The tights, which were comprised of a small fishnet pattern, were almost not visible at first glance. But zoom in a little closer and the fishnets come alive. Not only are the stockings a serious fashion statement, they make it clear Williams isn’t backing down to trolls who tell her she can’t dress how she wants on court.
Speaking to Metro after the game, Williams thanked Nike who designed the outfit for her, and confirmed she’s been collaborating with the brand to create clothes that work with her post-baby body.
“Nike always wants to make an incredibly strong, powerful statement for moms that are trying to get back and get fit. That was basically it for me,” she said. The dress is now available to buy on Nike's website, so you too can channel Williams's fierce on-court style.
It isn’t the first time Williams has made a fashion statement on the court. In August, Williams competed at the US Open in a Virgil Abloh-designed black tutu, a direct comment on the French Open’s ban on Williams’s famous catsuit. Now, with the blue jumpsuit and fishnets taking centre stage, we’ve only got high hopes for what’s to come.
