Please note: this article contains major spoilers for Succession, Season Four, Episode 10.
The writers of Succession really had to give us a golden glimpse of the good life—a utopic reality where all the Roy siblings get along and fight the dangerous corporate forces that be as a united front—before burning it all up in flames.
Arguably, Logan Roy’s parenting approach couldn’t have possibly brought up children that would do anything different, each willing to sell the other out as soon as the wind blew in their direction.
We open the episode with Shiv ‘the harbinger of doom’ Roy (Sarah Snook) saying, “Tom will honestly suck the biggest d**k in the room.” She couldn’t have been more on the money.
The epic 90-minute episode is like a long-distance horse race, where you just know the one that is coming first won’t have the stamina to pull through at the end and steal the win (a.k.a. the top job as CEO of Waystar Royco).
First we see Shiv aligning herself with Lukas Matsson to be US CEO once the GoJo deal goes through, only for her to find out that Matsson never meant to put her in the top spot (she didn’t know that her estranged husband Tom Wambsgans was the intended hire).
Shiv then swaps to her brothers’ side, and we experience the most wholesome family moment, as the three siblings decide to work together, with Kendall (Jeremy Strong) as their leader, to block the deal. Once the decision is agreed upon, the Roy children regress to their childhood selves, naughtily ripping things out of their mother’s fridge to blend into a disgusting drink for their supposed incoming ‘boss’, Kendall.

Of course, we were blindsided with the devastation of the final boardroom scene, where Shiv’s ‘wobble’ triggers Ken and burns down the bridges they’d just built, ending with none of them keeping the throne and it being given to Matsson and Wambsgans. In the end, it was Shiv dealing the final blow in favour of her relationship and family life with Tom over her brothers’ success.
There was a shining light of this episode, in the form of cut-throat one-liners, including:
- “Don’t be all f**king Joan of Waystar,” (to Shiv)
- “Maybe you’re well-adjusted and I’m a business psycho,” (Ken to Roman)
- “You’re a grilled cheese with a sucked d**k,” (Ken to Stewy)
Yet, there’s no denying that this finale well and truly broke fans and had them wishing their pre-grieving could temper the sorrowful reality of Shiv submitting as the dutiful wife, Roman (Keiran Culkin) drinking away his sorrows and Ken reaching his most meaningless point yet.
