Around 20,000 Protesters Marched In Sydney To Protest Climate Change

As the NSW bushfires rage on

On Wednesday evening in Sydney, around 20,000 protesters marched from Town Hall to Hyde Park to demand stronger climate action as bushfires continue to rage across NSW, covering the state with smoke.

The event which was set up last week by Extinction Rebellion, Uni Students for Climate Justice, and Greens MP David Shoebridge, expected a turnout of 5,000, but on the night numbers were around four times that, estimated to be around or over 2,000, with attendees wearing P2 face masks (created to protect people from asbestos), to symbolise the ongoing climate emergency.

Signs reading messages such as, ‘I’ve seen smarter cabinets at Ikea’, ‘Do it for David’ and ‘I’m into being choked, just not by smoke’ were held by adults, teenagers and children as protesters listened to a series of speakers before marching  down York Street, before turning onto Park Street and heading east towards Elizabeth Street and Hyde Park.
