The First Images From The Set Of ‘The Crown’ Are Here

So ready for this

Yesterday Claire Foy won an Emmy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, dedicating her award to the show’s next generation. For season three of the hit period drama, Foy and her co-stars Matt Smith and Vanessa Kirby are stepping aside to make way for Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham Carter and Tobias Menzies.

While the third instalment of The Crown is still a while away (sob), we finally have our first look at the new cast in their roles.

Colman, who plays the Queen, and Bonham Carter, who plays Princess Margaret, were spotted filming a funeral scene, dressed in black coats and hats.

The Daily Mail has theorised that the funeral being filmed is Winston Churchill’s, as the former prime minister passed away in January of 1965 and the outfits the royals wore in real-life are almost identical to that of the film set.

Though we don’t have solid details on what season three of The Crown will cover, two producers let slip minor details about the plot. Susanne Mackie, revealed that the beginnings of Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles’ relationship will be covered (the pair first met at a polo match in 1971, six years before Prince Charles met Princess Diana) and the show’s historian, Robert Lacey, told Town & Country that the break down of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon’s marriage will be a key focus. “In season three, without giving anything away – it’s on the record, it’s history – we’ll see the breakup of this extraordinary marriage between Margaret and Snowdon,” he revealed.

It’s likely Princess Diana won’t enter the scene until season four of the show, which is being filmed back-to-back with season three (meaning, hopefully, the wait won’t be quite as long).
