It’s almost time to return to Downton Abbey – the first trailer for the highly anticipated movie has arrived offering fans a sneak peek at what’s to come when the film is released in September 2019. Yes, the popular British TV series ended its run in late 2015, but on Wednesday morning, the first trailer for director Michael Engler’s Downton Abbey film was released, which will continue the story of the Crawley family and their houseful of servants.
The two-and-a-half minute trailer reveals the film will take place in 1927, bout a year and a half after the TV series ended and the characters are preparing for the arrival of two very special guests. Two very special royal guests, in fact: King George V (portrayed by Simon Jones) and Queen Mary (Geraldine James).

Focus Features and Carnival Films are producing the Downton movie, telling Deadline that show creator Julian Fellowes has written the screenplay and many of the original cast – including Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Anna Bates (Joanne Froggatt), John Bates (Brendan Coyle), the Countess of Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern) and the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) – are all on board.
“When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production,” film producer Gareth Neame told Deadline. “Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”
The movie isn’t scheduled to land in theatres until September 12, but something tells us it’ll be worth the wait.
Downton Abbey ran for six seasons and scored numerous accolades, from Golden Globes to Emmys to SAG awards.
