Lately, I’ve been wondering: where have all the nice tops gone? As a token millennial, I was raised on the ‘jeans and a nice top’ uniform but in recent seasons, trends have seen this once trusted combination flipped on its head. Tiny or ultra-basic tops paired with statement pants have become the new outfit blueprint.
#BigPantsLittleTop first saturated sartorial conversation on social media around 2022. It would be easy to reduce the trend to flow-on from the noughties fashion resurgence however, a more highbrow interpretation was ratified on the runways of the time at Jacquemus, Chanel and more.
Ever since, basic tanks, tops and specifically baby tees have cannibalised the consumer market. And while it’s been fun building out a collection of bold and oversized trousers, it’s led to a glaring gap in my wardrobe rotation that I’m eager to rectify.
Despite current trends being somewhat stacked against me, the search hasn’t been impossible.
I’m leaning into trending fabrics like lace as seen in this Maison Essentiele cami and sheer organza, like this billowy ASTR number as well as sculptural silhouettes such as this Camilla And Marc bodice or this Lovaan puff-sleeve blouse.
Flourishes like floral embroidery or a dramatic tassel also serve to stand out from a sea of basics. And never underestimate the elevating power a touch of metal hardware can make to an otherwise simple style; see this Meshki ruched tank, Elka Collective’s knit halter or this statement backless style from Cult Gaia.
