The Bachelor‘s Alex Nation has opened up about marriage equality during a candid conversation on community radio station 88.3 Southern FM.
The 26-year-old all-but confirmed her new relationship with WFL Frankstown Bombers teammate Maegan Luxa, sharing how her experience on the team has shaped her experience of same-sex relationships.
“Before being in a football club I didn’t have any friends that were in relationships with women, I’d never experienced that. Obviously, I had seen it down the street and everything like that but I’d never experienced it first-hand with my own friends. Since I have joined the football club, I now have many friends who are in same-sex relationships and it opens your eyes to certain little struggles that they go through for women in a couple. At the same time, you see the two of them together and they are exactly the same as you would be [in a heterosexual relationship].”
When asked for or her thoughts on the same-sex marriage plebiscite, the former Bachelor star echoed the sentiment that love transcends gender.
“We should celebrate love between people whether it is male, male and female or women and female. I think if you have a connection with someone you can’t – people can’t help who they connect with… that should be all that matters,” she said.
Nation’s relationship with Maegan came to light following photos, published by New Idea. In the images, Alex is seen kissing Maegan and holding her arm, with a friend confirming the football teammates are dating.
“They are now inseparable, spending very few nights apart, but it was all a bit of a shock,” Alex’s friend, who chose to remain anonymous told New Idea.
“Up until this point, Alex had only ever had relationships with men. ”
“Right now she is not giving this or herself any sort of label such as being gay or bisexual. She does not see the need to categorise it that way,” they continued.
