Apple’s ‘Truth Be Told’ Is ‘The Sinner’ Meets ‘Serial’ And Brings True Crime Podcasts To Life

From your headphones to your screen

Since the birth of podcasts like Serial and My Favorite Murder, the uprising of true crime podcasts has resulted in a worldwide obsession like no other.

Spurring documentaries like Netflix’s Making A Murderer or HBO’s I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, the global fascination with true crime cases has turned into real-life detective work with many providing enough evidence to convict criminals who previously escaped punishment for their crimes.

A play on the modern role of the true crime podcast, Apple’s Truth Be Told depicts exactly that.

Starring Octavia Spencer, the anthology series follows an avid true crime podcaster whose past investigation may have gotten her into more trouble than she’d intended.

What Is The Plot Of Truth Be Told?

Similar to the structure of The Sinner, Truth Be Told is an anthology series that follows Poppy Parnell, a true crime podcaster, as she returns to past cases that she’s covered with each season covering a different case.

In season one, Parnell returns to the case of Warren Cave, a man convicted of murdering his neighbour when he was a teenager. Parnell has reason to believe that Cave may in fact be innocent, but because of her own sleuthing, it led to Cave’s conviction.

Parnell is aided by Markus Knox, a former detective and ex-lover, as she contends with nearly 20 years of family secrets and deceit in order to get to the truth and ultimately answer the question: Who really killed Chuck Buhrman?
