Woody Allen’s latest film, Café Society, opened the Cannes Film Festival last week, to lukewarm reviews. But it is accusations of the director’s alleged sexual abuse that have dominated coverage of Allen’s appearance at the festival.
Now, actress Susan Sarandon has weighed in on the issue, with comments at a panel discussion on women in film. “I have nothing good to say about Woody Allen,” she replied at yesterday’s conference, when the topic of the director came up. “I think he sexually abused a child and I don’t think that’s right.”
Sarandon’s comments follow a column in The Hollywood Reporter, written by Allen’s son Ronan Farrow, who accused the media of failing to ask hard questions about Allen’s alleged abuse of daughter Dylan Farrow.
Allen has long been dogged by abuse allegations, including a piece written two years ago by Dylan in The New York Times, which outlined her father’s alleged abuse – something he has repeatedly denied and rejected as “ludicrous”.
When the topic was again raised at a press lunch, during the festival last week, the director was equally dismissive. “I’ve said all I can say about it,” he replied to a reporter’s questions. “I have so move on that I never think about it. I work, I do my movies and hope that people like them.”
