I can't make a list of amazing women in tennis to watch without including our homegrown tennis legend, Ash Barty. Ash just claimed her first Grand Slam title at the French open after beating out Markéta Vondroušová at just 23-years-old. She is the first Australian woman to win the French Open in Singles since 1973 when Margaret Court won. She is a proud Indigenous woman of Ngaragu heritage and is a National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia.
Naomi Osaka is definitely one of the biggest names in women's tennis since her 2018 wins of two Grand Slam titles at the US and Australian Opens. She is also the first Asian player to be ranked no.1 in singles and is known for her powerful serve which can reach up to 200km per hour. Osaka lost out at Wimbledon on Monday after being beaten by Yulia Putinseva 7-6, 6-2. The 21-year-old is definitely one to keep your eye on as she progresses through the tournaments.
Pliskova is thought to be one of the favourites to win the Wimbledon cup this year as her fierce skills send her up the ladder. The Czech athlete is a former No. 1 and is currently ranked at No. 3 in the world by the Women's Tennis Association. Pliskova reached her first Grand Slam final in 2016 at the US Open where she was runner up to Angelique Kerber. As a junior she actually won the Australian Open's girl's singles event in 2010.
17-year-old Amanda Anisimova is definitely one to have your eye on as she makes her way to Wimbledon. The American player was born to Russian parents and began playing tennis at the ripe age of two. At this years French Open she became the youngest semi-finalist of the tournament in over a decade. She is currently the youngest player ranked in the top 100 b the Women's Tennis Association. She may be young but she has a lot going for her as she heads into the competition.
This reigning Wimbledon champion will return to the tournament this year in hopes to claim her second win after being out for a while with illness' and injury. The German legend has also one a Grand Slam title at the Australian open of 2016 when she defeated the iconic Serena Williams as well as the US Open when she won against Karolína Plíšková that year.
