Buffy lore states that into every generation a slayer is born, and the time for a new chosen one, some two decades on, is finally here. That’s right, a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot is officially in the works. And yes, Sarah Michelle Gellar is involved.
Sources first revealed to Variety that a sequel to the iconic 90s series is ‘nearing a pilot order at Hulu’ in February, and since then, we’ve been waiting with bated breath to see who would be joining the cast.
Who Is Cast In The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot?
Gellar, who played the vampire-slaying teen from 1997 to 2003, is confirmed to be reprising her role as Buffy Summers in a recurring capacity with a focus on the next generation of slayer.
Now, as the pilot progresses, the cast announcements are coming in hot with news that 15-year-old actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong has just been tapped to play Gellar’s spiritual successor.
The show’s writers, Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, shared the news with the Buffyverse earlier today in post celebrating the update: “We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absoutely blew us away – there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one,” they said.
The Canadian-born actress, who is best known for her starring role opposite Jude Law on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, had a personal visit (albeit virtual) from Gellar herself, who surprised Armstrong with the news.
Will The Original Buffy Cast Return For The Reboot?
For OG fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, confirmation that Gellar is reprising her role comes with a sigh of relief, but the great casting news may not end there.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gellar revealed she wants as many original cast members to make a return as possible.
“We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”
The comment comes serendipitously with the publication’s interview with Pedro Pascal who relived his iconic one-episode stint on Buffy.
“Everyone was dying to be on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, so when I got season four premiere episode, I couldn’t beleive it,” he said, “Then I died after one scene.” Could we see a fun cameo from Pascal? Who knows.
As for who else from the original will join, that’s yet to be confirmed (we’re hoping for Spike aka James Marsters).
Gellar is also expected to executive produce alongside Gail Berman and Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman who will also write and showrun. Joss Whedon, who originally created the series, is noticeably absent following shocking allegations of “abuse of power” on the set of the show.
In February of 2021, Charisma Carpenter who played Cordelia Chase on the show, spoke out about her experience with Whedon.
“Joss Whedon abused his power on numerous occasions while working on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel,” Carpenter wrote in a statement.
“While he found his misconduct amusing, it only served to intensify my performance anxiety, disempower me, and alienate me from my peers. The disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer. It is with a beating, heavy heart that I say I coped in isolation and, at times, destructively.”
Gellar soon issued her own statement following several others speaking out, writing: “While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to forever be associated with Joss Whedon.
“I stand with all the survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out.”
