Dolly Alderton’s Best-Selling Memoir, ‘Everything I Know About Love’, Is Being Adapted Into A Series

The screenplay for the upcoming series will be written by the award-winning journalist.

Two years on from the release of her debut book, Everything I Know About Love, Dolly Alderton’s memoir is being dramatised for the BBC. The best-seller is part memoir, part advice column, which sees Alderton bring her self-deprecating, hilarious and at times, heartbreaking musings on love, friendship and relationships from her 20s, to the page.

The former podcast host of The High Lowalongside fellow writer Pandora Sykes, revealed the news in May 2021, taking to Instagram to share that she’s been working on its screenplay for the past four years. “I am so excited that my TV show Everything I Know About Love is being announced today. The story is a romantic comedy about two best friends, written by me and directed by the phenomenally clever @chinamooyoung.”

Piers Wenger, controller of commissioning drama at the BBC, added: “I’m sure people will compare it to Sex and the City, or to Girls but the truth is Dolly is an author in her own right, and she is uproariously funny and it’s a very personal, and at times dark story, but with massive amounts of humour and emotional truths to it.”

The project was just one of six exciting adaptations announced by the BBC, including a first TV project from author Candice Carty-Williams after the huge success of her debut Queenie and a new Michaela Coel project, who was behind I May Destroy You.

What Will Everything I Know About Love Be About?

As has already been announced, Alderton will be penning the screenplay as well as serving as executive producer, and it will be directed by China Moo-Young

“Maggie and Birdy, besties since school, finally land in London to live it large, when the unexpected happens—dependable Birdy gets a steady boyfriend,” reads its official synopsis,” via BBC. “A generous, funny, warm-hearted and uplifting Sex & The City for millennials which covers bad dates and squalid flat-shares, heartaches and humiliations, and, most importantly, unbreakable female friendships.”

Alderon also shared some insights into the potential plot of the upcoming project.

Everything I Know About Love is a semi-fictionalised adaptation of my memoir of the same name,” the author said in a statement, via Variety. “It’s a messy, boisterous, joyful, romantic comedy about two best female friends from childhood and what happens when they move into their first London house share and the first phase of adulthood. I cannot stress enough how thrilled I am that it is being made by Working Title and the BBC.”

Of course, Alderton also teased her former boyfriends who were mentioned in the book, saying: “And before every boy I dated a decade ago messages me today to breezily ask how I am, it’s semi-fictionalised, so don’t panic fellas.”
