We were lucky enough to receive a review product to road-test the Dyson Hot- + Cool Formaldehyde, and it definitely lives up to its hype, especially when it comes to heating in winter.
What Is The Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde?
In short, it's a 3-in-1 product designed to be a fan in summer, a heater in winter and an air purifier year-round.
The difference between this purifier and previous iterations is the inclusion of a new filter that works to eliminate formaldehyde in the air, a chemical that is emitted from some furniture, glues, adhesives and other items commonly found in households. It's 500 times smaller than 0.1 microns, so previous filters could not catch it.
Is The Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde Good At Heating?
Yes. This was by far the biggest benefit of the Dyson Hot + Cool we found from this review. There's a reason it's one of the top rated heaters on Choice.com.au - it heats a regular-sized room in minutes, and maintains heat thanks to a very efficient thermostat. Set yours at around 20C and you'll have a comfortable room all day, without blasting the heater to maintain it.
It's also whisper-quiet as it does this, great news for light sleepers or distracted home workers.
Is The Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde Good At Cooling?
This we would say is the weakness of the Dyson Hot + Cool range in general. While the fan is a welcome reprieve on mildly hot days, in humid conditions you're not going to get a lot of benefit from it as a cooling device. It doesn't stack up compared to industrial-style powerful fans or, of course, air conditioning. Still, it will move stuffy air around the room to eliminate that muggy feeling, and we found it useful on mild summer nights to keep the room feeling fresh.
Is The Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde Good At Air Purifying?
Yes. Very much so - a test we ran were putting it on for an hour after burning a lasagna (don't ask), during which you could see the device's screen showing pollutants in the air. When we next walked into the room, the smell of burnt food was gone and the machine was showing green again.
In general, the Dyson air purifiers are great for cleaning the air in a room, and we used one during the 2020 bushfires in NSW, watching (and smelling) it clean the smoke out of a room in under 30 minutes. It's a great choice if you're particularly affected by dust, allergens and other airborne irritants.
How Much Does The Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde Cost?
It's not a cheap one - this latest model will set you back $999. Still, Dyson products are built to last, with a 2 year guarantee that offers free replacement parts, and a free replacement machine if parts do not fix the issue. More on the finer details around that here.
If you're interested primarily in a heater function, the Dyson Hot + Cool original retails slightly cheaper at $899.
