Sofia Coppola is turning her lens onto longtime friend and collaborator, Marc Jacobs, for her first documentary project titled Marc by Sofia.
The film is set to premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival next month – in an out-of-competition slot – and will be the first of its kind for fashion’s favourite director.
Though details about the documentary’s content still remain under wraps, it’s likely to explore the life and career of lauded designer Marc Jacobs through a point of view that only a decades-long friendship like theirs could provide.
While Jacobs may be the subject of Coppola’s upcoming project, it’s the director who’s been the object of Jacobs’ designer eye since they first met in 1992.
Sharing the history of their relationship in an interview with Dazed in 2015, Jacobs spoke at length about the impact their friendship has had on his work over the years. “Sofia was one of the few who recognised something special and related to what I was doing at that time. She wanted to meet me, and when we did, it was love at first sight for me!”
“Not only was I attracted to how she looked, her sense of style, I was drawn to her manner, her behaviour, her life, her ambitions and creativity…” he continued.
“She represented everything I am drawn to – talent, style, creativity, a unique ‘vision and voice’. She represented everything I am drawn to – talent, style creativity, a unique ‘vision and voice’… We became great friends immediately.”
Needless to say, a documentary built on the foundations of genuine connection is sure to go beyond surface level to explore the designer and his legacy like never before.
