Margot Robbie’s Press Tour Looks Are Peak Romantic Maximalism

If there were any lingering doubt about Margot Robbie’s command of the modern press tour, it has now been decisively put to rest.

From the moment Wuthering Heights entered public discourse, it was clear the film would provoke scrutiny, particularly around costuming and its relationship to period fidelity. Expectations of corsets and crinolines surfaced almost immediately, accompanied by the familiar anxiety over whether the adaptation would submit to the historical exactitude of the book or stray from it.

But this is Emerald Fennell’s territory. As Promising Young Woman and Saltburn made abundantly clear, she is a filmmaker for whom aesthetics are never ornamental. Her worlds are stylised, psychologically charged and often deliberately anachronistic, designed to provoke interpretation rather than compliance.

Robbie understands this instinctively. Alongside long-time stylist Andrew Mukamal, she has spent the better part of a decade refining press-tour dressing into a narrative device in its own right, and her recent appearances feel like a pointed reminder of that mastery.

Their collaborations have yielded a run of near-mythic fashion moments, from A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which culminated in a barely-there Armani Privé gown dusted with kaleidoscopic embellishment, to Barbie, a masterclass in method dressing that now occupies a permanent place in press-tour lore.

For Wuthering Heights, Mukamal’s approach is intentionally less literal and far more discursive. Rather than reproducing late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century dress, Robbie’s wardrobe draws from the period’s emotional architecture: its gothic intensity, repression and volatility. These references are then filtered through a modern lens, privileging atmosphere over accuracy.

The now-viral Dilara Findikoglu corset, executed in red leather snakeskin, crystallises this strategy. Its silhouette gestures toward the past, but its materiality is unmistakably contemporary, rejecting nostalgia in favour of confrontation.

While there remains considerable intrigue surrounding Jacqueline Durran’s costume design for the film itself, and how gothic romance, Georgian influence and modern sensibilities will ultimately collide on screen, Robbie’s press tour has already established a parallel text.

Jacob Elordi, no stranger to thematic dressing following his turn on Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein press circuit, has likewise delivered refined, heritage-inflected looks that echo the film’s dark romanticism.
