Your new season essential

1/ Office hours

Dressing for work during the cooler months takes a tad more effort than summerโ€™s throw-on-and-go dresses. Enter the knitted skirt, which is chic, cosy and an on-trend alternative to classic pencil silhouettes. For a polished look that will take you from boardroom to bar, follow Sara Donaldsonโ€™s lead by teaming with a crisp white shirt, ankle boots and finishing with a chain-strap bag. โ€œMake the most of the skirtโ€™s flattering high waistline by tucking your top in,โ€ says marie claire fashion assistant Monica Russell. โ€œItโ€™s a quick, easy way to fake an hourglass silhouette.โ€

2/ Off-duty cool

For a more casual setting, sub in a checked button-up and knot it up at the waist ร  la Andy Csinger. โ€œWith a fluid, lightweight trench and strappy pumps, this outfit is a fun option for dinner out with the girls,โ€ says Russell. โ€œYou could also wear the skirt, shirt and coat with white sneakers when youโ€™re running errands on the weekend.โ€
