There are important moments in life that you’ll remember forever.
For some it’s their wedding day or the first ever designer purchase they made. For us, it’s the moment we saw Anthony Vaccarello’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection for Saint Laurent walk down the creamy, carpeted runway at Paris Fashion Week. A cultural reset, as some would say.
While other designers were experimenting with maximalist silhouettes and new modes of design, Saint Laurent took sartorial cues from their astute legacy as a luxury French maison, proving that elegance will never go out of style.
With many moments from the fall collection to covet—a perfectly, but not to obvious, curated stack of chunky bangles that hug the wrist just right, or a cropped leather jacket that nipped the waist at the exact angle that would make us want to throw all caution to the wind and buy it right then and there—none we’re better than Vaccarello’s use of coating.
Layering and fashion has had a long love affair that surpasses that of even Yves Saint Laurent himself.
However, with this collection, nostalgic textures and silhouettes felt modern and revived, even though it’s a look stitched into the cultural fabric thanks to Hollywood icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Michelle Pfeiffer in Scar Face and even Alexa Demie in Euphoria.
Slinky slips and skin tight jumpsuits were masterfully hidden under cocooning, trapezoid shaped motorcycle jackets, or knee hitting hemlines on a chocolate trench coat.
Yet, all 55 looks we’re almost instantly forgetting when Saint Laurent muse Hailey Bieber stepped out one icy night in Paris that took our breath away.
Donning look seven from the collection, a.k.a one of the best faux fur trenches we’ve ever seen, Hailey proved the power that a good coat can hold.
Who needs an outfit, when the trench is so fierce it’s worthy of it’s own look. Move over Margot Tannenbaum, we have a new coat connoisseur in town.
If there’s one thing we learnt from the coat conundrum of this year—you’ll recall the firm grip Sienna Miller’s Max Mara coat from Anatomy Of A Scandal had over us—it’s that irregardless of the season or the silhouette, a good coat can fix anything.
Thankfully for us, the powers at be (a.k.a Kering) have finally dropped this collection in store.
Yes, ever marble-floored and gold accented boutique from the Rive Droite to Rodeo Drive and beyond will be fully stocked with the charcoal mid-length coat.
Other favourites including the fall iteration of Saint Laurent’s signature stretched jersey, cutout jumpsuit and knee high velvet boots have also made their way to the store floor.
Sure, we hear you wonder why we’d invest in a fur coat as we head into Spring. But if these past few years have shown us anything, then the answer is why not?
It’s the same reason why Carrie Bradshaw spends her paychecks on handbags rather than rent. We may not have seen anyone wear a faux fur shawl to the beach, but with the right bikini we bet it would be one hell of a look.
And given that Game Of Thrones is back on our screens with House Of The Dragon, it could be the perfect outfit to sartorially pay homage to the Northern Lords who are sadly not getting enough screen time this season.
Or even a suitable outfit to scroll the Saint Laurent website in for your next item of affection.
Either way, we’ve already got our signature Saint Laurent sling back pumps on, clutched our Icare maxi shopping tote and are heading to our closest boutique. In Saint Laurent we trust.
