There are plenty of couples that have gone the distance in Hollywood, but there’s none quite as swoon-worthy as George and Amal Clooney. Whether they’re walking the red carpet hand-in-hand or fawning over each other in interviews, it’s clear that these two were brought together for a reason—and that’s to give us relationship goals to strive for.
Now, George is talking about the moment when he first saw Amal Alamuddin, and how it changed his life forever. In a recent interview with everyone’s favourite rain lover and dating sceptic, Drew Barrymore, the Ticket To Paradise star explained how he and his wife first met, which was slightly set up by a mutual friend of the pair.
Acknowledging that he was immediately besotted by Amal from the first second he saw her, George explained how his agent, Bryan, already predicted that the pair would eventually be walking down the aisle and saying ‘I do’.
“The funniest thing is, Bryan Lourd, my agent…he called me up and said, ‘There’s a girl coming to your house that you’re gonna marry’,” George recalled on The Drew Barrymore Show. “And I was like, ‘You’re an idiot. Like, that’s not gonna happen.’ And then in comes Amal.”
Just in case we didn’t already love their meet cute enough, George went onto add that he and Amal stayed up all night talking and it was then that he “started writing her… a bunch of letters”.
Floored by the romance, like the rest of us, Drew interjected to get George to reiterate what he had just confessed.
“You wrote her! Like, on pen and paper!?” Drew exclaimed, before George confirmed that not only was that fact very true, but his romantic gestures haven’t expired. “We still write letters,” he said, as Barrymore squealed, “You still write letters!”
Sharing the clip from the interview on Instagram, Drew captioned the video, “Is this real life?”. Clearly, George’s years of romantic comedies has taught him a thing or two about how to sweep Amal off her feet, and honestly, he’s doing the same to us by proxy.
The reason behind this sweet fact? Well, George has been doing the media rounds to promote his and Julia Roberts film, Ticket to Paradise. According to IMDb, the film follows “David and Georgia, two divorced parents who can’t stand each other, head to Bali after their daughter, Lily, announces her plans to marry a local islander she just met while on holiday”.
As for their onscreen kissing scenes, George made it clear that he isn’t a fan of having a moment of PDA choreographed for him. Speaking of a kiss that’s presumably between his and Roberts’ characters—likely as a ploy to convince their daughter to cancel the nuptials—George shared that the fleeting onscreen moment took a mammoth amount of time.
“I remember early on in my career, I had to do a kissing scene with this girl and the director goes, ‘Not like that’. And I was like, ‘Dude, that’s my move! That’s what I do in real life!'” he told The New York Times.
He continued, “It was sort of that same way here, because everyone had plans for how we should dance, and then we were like, ‘Well, actually we’ve got some really bad dance moves in real life.’ Julia and I have done all those moves before, that’s the sickest part.”
“Yeah. I told my wife [Amal], ‘It took 80 takes’. She was like, ‘What the hell?'” he said.
Before Roberts clarified, “It took 79 takes of us laughing and then the one take of us kissing.”
