You Won’t Believe How Often Gwen Stefani Dyes Her Hair

The singer has been platinum blonde since 1990

Gwen Stefani has impossibly bright platinum blonde hair. This is a fact. It’s well known that Gwen’s natural colour isn’t quite that white (duh), however, we didn’t realise just how much effort the star puts in to maintaining the hue, until now.

In a chat with Refinery29, Gwen’s long-time hairstylist Danilo Dixon revealed the secret to nailing her white blonde hair. First up, there’s actually no bleach involved. Say WHAT?! Danilo actually developed his very own formula for the singer, which he applied every. single. week.

“We colour her hair every Monday, before we film The Voice,” he told the publication.

“Gwen’s an Italian girl with wavy brown hair — if you look at the video for Cool, we did her in her natural shade, maybe a little darker — so I developed a high lift formula for her. I learned that I could get to a place of achieving the blond that I want, and the quality of hair that we need and want, by using a new product, as opposed to just bleach. People are like ‘that’s not natural’ and I say, ‘Of course it is — it’ssupernatural’.”

We guess that explains how Gwen has perfect roots 365 days a year.

Keep in mind, the woman has rocked this colour since 1990. That’s a whopping 27 years of maintenance!

As for keeping her mane slick, the hairstylist revealed he’s a big fan of leave-in conditioner.

“Leave-in conditioners — that’s really the secret,” he said. “So many people are blow drying and using hot tools, which is where most of the damage happens — so I’m always telling people to learn how to work with leave-in conditioning at every stage of styling.”
