Meet The Hat Trends You’re Going To See Everywhere This Season

Not your mother's millinery

The humble hat isn’t always the first thing you think about when it comes to summer fashion, but they should definitely be a priority when packing your beach bag (second only to SPF, of course).

Now, most of us have that one go-to hat, whether it’s an old baseball cap that’s hanging together by a thread, or a trusty boater that you snapped up at a flea market many years ago.

But throughout this year, we’ve seen hats evolve from simply necessary to fashion statement and there have been some particular styles that keep popping up on our trend radars.

So, if you too are finding yourself suddenly thinking about these once neglected accessories, then look to these five styles that we’re tipping to be huge come beach weather.

Not only will your skin thank you for the sun protection, but you’ll be plenty equipped for summer.

When it comes to sun safety, a wide-brimmed hat is one part of a vital safety routine. And while you may think you’re sun smart, it always helps checking the latest news and measures in this space via The Cancer Council — Australia’s foremost resource for sun safety information. The Cancer Council and Australian Government have also created End The Trend, a campaign to fight unsafe sun behaviours.

The (Chic) Bucket Hat

Bucket hats rose to new heights as streetwear took off. But now, the vintage style has gotten a very 2020s makeover. Extended brims, frayed edges and canvas or denim fabrics are the key to giving this style a modern twist.

The Straw Hat

Never out of style, the straw hat has truly stood the test of time. But to give this style a seasonal flair, there are two versions that sit ahead of the pack this season. Look to either the mini prairie style that’s short on the brim and relaxed in fit, or the elongated cone shape that offers maximum sun protection. Both very chic choices.

The Terry Towelling Hat

You’ve likely seen this fabric everywhere, but summer and terry towelling go together like wine and cheese (as in: one usually leads to the other). These fun and versatile hats are best worn in bold, summery colours like green, pinks and blues.

The Playschool Hat

Look familiar? It’s probably reminiscent of a style that you refused to bring with you, making your mother very cross. Well, you won’t need convincing to rock this old-school style anymore, given all the brands that have given it a much-welcomed reboot.

Characterised by their wide brim, soft fabric and that essential drawcord (no need to worry about it flying off in the wind), they also almost exclusively come in fun, summer appropriate patterns and colours.

The Dad Cap

The good old cap has definitely made a surprising comeback this year, but to separate it from just any cap, we’re opting for the ’90s style dad cap that screams vacation. We all have one lying around somewhere, throw a new one in the wash to give it a softer look.
