Anya Taylor-Joy’s ‘Last Night In Soho’ Is A 1960s Nightmare That Puts The Fear In Nostalgia

Beth Harmon, who?

When it comes to Anya Taylor-Joy and the 1960s, it seems as if the pair are intrinsically linked. While many are familiar with Joy’s crushing of the patriarchy as The Queen’s Gambit chess master, Beth Harmon, it turns out that her acting range is getting put to the test, thanks to a new film.

Enter: Last Night In Soho.

An Edgar Wright creation—think: Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver—the flick has already earned itself approval as one of the most anticipated projects of the year due to its intriguing plot and star-studded cast lineup.

Described as a psychological horror, the dark and twisted narrative will see Taylor-Joy portray an aspiring singer in ’60s London who encounters suspicious figures and concerning circumstances, much like Harmon—but with a beehive, rather than a bob.

In an interview with The Wrap, Wright explained how the film is actually a “cautionary tale” about nostalgia, and how the illusion of the “good old days” is a bubble that popped long ago.

“The moral of the story is, even if you could travel back in time, you can’t have the good without the bad, so it’s sort of a cautionary tale for those who are overly nostalgic about the past,” Wright explained.

“There is no perfect decade where everything was good and nothing was bad. It doesn’t exist… They like to imagine it was all better before but, of course, that’s not true.”
