Really testing that 'never complain, never explain' mantra.

All eyes are currently on Prince Harry as he releases his tell-all memoir Spare—and drops a number of major bombshells in the process. So naturally, the next thing that now demands our attention is a response from the very people those bombshells are about: the royal family.

The British Firm’s stiff upper lip mentality and mantra to “never complain, never explain” has worked for them (to varying degrees) in the past, but the nature of Harry’s allegations in his book (more about the biggest ones here) and the interviews the Duke of Sussex has given to promote it would seemingly leave the royals with no choice but to publish a statement, right? Well, maybe.

How have the royals responded to Harry’s book, Spare?

So far, the royals haven’t provided a response to the allegations Prince Harry made in his memoir. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t say anything at all, however. A lot of anecdotes from the book were published ahead of its release date (January 10), so it might be that the family are waiting for all evidence to drop officially before speaking.

In Spare, Harry unpacks some of the narratives twisted by media, as well as delving into personal anecdotes, many of which shine a problematic light on those in the royal family. From William’s alleged physical assault on his younger brother, to King Charles’ jokes about Harry’s paternity, there’s a lot to unpack.

Interestingly, royal reporter Omid Scobie Tweeted that a law firm representing Buckingham Palace had reached out to Good Morning America ahead of its promo interview with Prince Harry this week. Scobie shared a comment via Michael Strahan who claims the law firm requested a copy of the entire interview before it went to air because it needed to “consider exactly what is said in the interview, in the context in which it appears”. Due to the media distributor’s policies, GMA could not provide them a copy.

Whether or not the palace responds to the book (or subsequent interviews the Duke has given to promote it), Prince Harry is quite certain about one thing: Prince. Charles and Prince William will probably never read Spare

In his CBS interview with Tom Brady, the Duke of Sussex said he “really hopes” they do, “But I don’t think they will.”

“And with regard to this interview, I don’t know whether they’ll be watching this or not, but what they have to say to me and what I have to say to them will be in private, and I hope it can stay that way.”

Watch this space, no doubt there will be more developments to come.
