There are infinite reasons why we adore Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot. The former Israeli Defense Forces combat trainer and Miss Israel smashed box office records and stereotypes with her kickass portrayal of Wonder Woman and performed many of her own stunts. She has has offered incredible wisdom about everything from motherhood to confidence—and now, feminism.
In an interview with Rolling Stone for the magazine’s 50th anniversary issue, Gadot explained her stance that everyone should be a feminist.
“People always ask me, ‘Are you a feminist?’ And I find the question surprising, because I think, ‘Yes, of course. Every woman, every man, everyone should be a feminist. Because whoever is not a feminist is a sexist,’” she said.
The actress recounted her own everyday encounters with sexism and being belittle for being a woman.
“I’ve had my moments where I’ve felt like men were misbehaving–nothing sexual, but inappropriate in a sexist way. Dismissive. Life wasn’t always rosy and peachy for me as a woman in the world,” she said.
In the interview, Gadot also hit back at those who had spouted sexist criticism of her physical appearance in the $800 million USD dollar grossing film.
“I told them, ‘Listen, if you want to be for real, then the Amazons, they had only one boob. Exactly one boob,'” she said. “‘So what are you talking about here? Me having small boobs and small ass? That will make all the difference.'”
Last week, Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins slammed director James Cameron for his criticism of Gadot’s charcter as merely an “objectified icon”.
Jenkins took to Twitter to explain that her film’s lead character was incredibly strong—and multidimensional.
“I believe women can and should be EVERYTHING just like male lead characters should be,” Jenkins wrote. “There is no right and wrong kind of powerful woman. And the massive female audience who made the film a hit it is, can surely choose and judge their own icons of progress.”
