It’s been 16 years since The Devil Wears Prada changed our lives forever, easily giving us the most quotable one-liners and unforgettable fashion moments that we still refer to almost two decades later.

Naturally, our endless rewatches of the film have left us wondering if a sequel could ever be on the cards. Now, Anne Hathaway is clearing up the rumours.

Easily one of Hathaway’s most notable projects—aside from The Princess Diaries, of course—The Devil Wears Prada catapulted her and Meryl Streep into an abundant lineup of award-winning films. Based on the 2003 novel of the same name, the book itself actually does have a sequel, aptly titled Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns.

As for a second visual instalment, there looks to be no plans for one, even though there is more than enough content to entertain the thought. Now, Hathaway has put an end to rumours around a sequel film and crushed our spirits forever.

In an interview with ET Online, Hathaway was walking the red carpet for her latest movie, Armageddon Time, and was directly asked whether a sequel to the fashion film was in the works.

“There’s not going to be a sequel. It’s not gonna happen. It’s just like, we can’t do it. It’s not gonna happen,” she told the publication. “It exists. There are other films. There will be other films. We can just watch that one [The Devil Wears Prada] again.”

Speculation around a sequel began when fashion Instagram account, Diet Prada, posted a photo from the Michael Kors spring 2023 show, showing the Oceans 8 star dressed à la Andy Sachs and sitting next to Anna Wintour—the inspiration behind the film’s ‘villain’, Miranda Priestly. However, Hathaway explained that choosing that particular outfit was done completely by chance and not with the intention of paying homage to the cult-classic film.

As for the rest of the film’s cast, Emily Blunt has also confessed that she doesn’t want a sequel to the film. Having played Miranda’s hilarious first assistant, Emily, Blunt explained that while she would be interested in a sequel if it were to come to fruition, she is hoping that it never will.

For the Quiet Place star, she believes that a sequel will ruin the icon status that the original film has garnered since its premiere.

“If everyone did it I would be up for it. I don’t know if there’s going to be a second film,” she explained on the Jess Cagle Interview podcast, as per People. “I almost hope it doesn’t because I think sometimes when you sequel everything [it] kind of dilutes how special the original is.

And while Hathaway hopes that the film won’t have a sequel, it doesn’t mean that she didn’t enjoy her time working on the fashion film. On the Devil Wears Prada‘s 10-year anniversary, the mother-of-two paid tribute to the flick on Instagram, and reflected on how it changed the course of her career. Following her work on the film, she landed her first Academy Award nomination for Rachel Getting Married, and then even won the Oscar in 2013 for her role in Les Misérables.

Since we know that a Devil Wears Prada sequel won’t be happening, you can bet that we’ll continue fawning over every time Hathaway channelled her onscreen character.
