It’s a superhero’s world and we’re all just living in it—or so the saying should go considering how many comic-to-big-screen adaptations we have on offer these days.
Still, these beloved franchises continue to surprise us with new (and arguably better) offerings—case in point: Batgirl.
Yes, DC Comics are reviving the iconic character in a 2022 film remake featuring the formidable Leslie Grace as Barbara Joan Gordon.
And while we still have a little wait ahead of us before we see her slay the streets of Gotham, the latest sneak peek has, well, piqued our interest ten-fold.
Here, everything we know (so far) about Batgirl.
What is the plot of Batgirl?
Going by the sneak peeks so far, Batgirl will follow Barbara Gordon in her early days as she becomes her infamous alias Batgirl.
While little more of the narrative is known, Leslie Grace told ELLE US the storyline would be “crazy dark”.
“I can’t say much about what she is going to do, but Batgirl becomes her own hero,” she said, adding: “She feels like people underestimate her as Barbara Gordon, and I relate to that.”
In January, Grace shared the first movie still where she can be seen in character. Wearing a midnight blue costume with golden trimmings and that infamous mask, she looks powerful as ever.
“I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me… And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts. – Batgirl, Year One,” Grace penned in the Twitter post.
Who is in the cast of Batgirl?
Alongside Leslie Grace as Batgirl, J. K. Simmons (a DC franchise stalwart) will reprise his role as Commissioner James Gordon, the father of Batgirl.
Meanwhile Brendan Fraser of Mummy will play the villain Firefly, per Deadline. Jacob Scipio of Bad Boys For Life fame has also been cast, though his role is yet to be revealed.
When will Batgirl be released?
While there’s no set release date for Batgirl just yet, the film is expected to drop some time in 2022. Fingers crossed it’s sooner rather than later!
Where can you watch Batgirl?
Batgirl will be released via HBO Max, meaning for us here in Australia, BINGE is most likely to house the brand new feature film.
