An ‘Ice Breaker’ Adaptation Is Coming, Co-Signed By Alex Cooper

We're ready to face off

Netflix is entering the boy aquarium, announcing the news it will be adapting the hit ice hockey romance, Ice Breaker, for streaming and I personally couldn’t be more thrilled.

Hot off the heels – or in this case, skates – of shows like Heated Rivalry and Off Campus, which have seen record-breaking success to become cultural touchstones of our time, it’s no surprise Netflix wants in on the steamy action.

For those whose entire algorithm isn’t BookTok like me, Hannah Grace’s Ice Breaker was one of the first viral romance novels that truly marked a shift in the way “smut” was spoken about and perceived. It wasn’t that the story itself was genre-defining but that its virality turned it into a gateway novel for readers who then further explored the well-covered ice hockey romance genre.

Adding to the fervour around this particular adaptation is the fact it’s being executive produced by Unwell Productions, from Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre. Given how synonymous Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast is with opening discussing female pleasure and sex, it’s a positive sign for the steamy storylines within the book.

What Is Ice Breaker About?

Hannah Grace’s debut novel follows figure skater Anastasia Allen and hockey captain Nathan Hawkins, two students at the University of California, Maple Hills who are forced to share a rink after the hockey team’s ice is destroyed by pranksters.

What begins as frustration over scheduling — Anastasia is already navigating the loss of her skating partner to injury while the hockey team keeps cutting into her training time — slowly evolves into something neither of them planned for.

The best part, in my opinion, is the novel subverting that classic sunshine x grumpy trope, with Anastasia carrying the tough exterior and Nate playing the warm, cheerful counterpart. And yes, it is, as promised, very spicy.

When Will Ice Breaker Be Released?

As for when we can expect to watch Ice Breaker, no premiere date has been set just yet. Given the show was only just announced, it’s unlikely to hit the streamer before late 2027 or even 2028.

In the meantime, there’s plenty of source material to get through: Icebreaker is the first of three novels in the Maple Hills series, followed by Wildfire and Daydream, with each book following a different couple. Consider this your sign to get reading.
