It’s been almost three decades since the original film, starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney, stole our hearts to become an eternal rom-com icon.

My Best Friend’s Wedding centred on Julianna (Roberts) and her college best-friend Michael (Mulroney) who made a pact to marry one another if they found they were both still single at 28. Expecting a proposal on the eve of the titular birthday, Julianna is heartbroken and shocked to instead receive an invitation to Michael’s surprise wedding to Kimmy (Diaz). Ugh, our hearts.

Is A My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel Happening?

According to Collider, a sequel to the 90s film is in ‘early development’ with Past Lives and Materialists’ genius Celine Song tapped to screenwrite.

The potential sequel is said to be in the very, very early stages of development which means there’s no news on the casting, nor will there likely be for some time.

Are The My Best Friend’s Wedding Cast Returning For The Sequel?

In a recent interview with the New York Post, Mulroney was asked about a  potential sequel.

“There is talk of a sequel,” he told the outlet. “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”

During a 2023 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Roberts revealed the rom-com would be her top pick for a sequel from her extensive filmography.

The actress noted she’d want “to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going.”

Diaz, who played college junior Kimmy, has also recently returned to the film industry after years away from the spotlight. The 52-year-old returned to the screen following a near decade-long hiatus for the 2025 film Back In Action. The coming out of retirement gives us hopes Diaz may also be on board for the sequel.
