The Off Campus series may have only just dropped but if you’re like us, you’ve already burned your way through the adaptation and are onto your second watch.
And, if that’s the case you’re probably still reeling from the finale twist no one saw coming.
Spoilers ahead.
One of the biggest surprises of Season 1 was just how much of Dean and Allie’s love story played out on screen. As the third book in Elle Kennedy’s series, fans weren’t exactly expecting their romance to arrive so soon, and yet we got a veritable highlight reel: Winston’s bathtub cameo, their secret New York rendezvous, the works.
As panic set in that we might not get an entire season dedicated to Daddy Dean, the show made a pivot from the original storyline to introduce Carter St James.
Freaked out by the seriousness of their situationship, Allie proposed they both sleep with other people. After a hot hookup at a bar, fate had it that the acting major would run into Carter again — and honestly? We loved every second of it.
As Allie confessed she’d followed through on their agreement, Carter walks back into the bar. Except his name isn’t Carter at all. It’s Hunter Davenport, and he has a very checkered history with Dean. A brawl breaks out, credits roll, and we’re left perfectly set up for a Season 2 dedicated to Dean and Allie.
But who exactly is Hunter Davenport aka Carter St James, and where does he fit in the Off Campus universe?

Hunter Davenport isn’t just a show invention — the hockey player gets the full novel treatment with his own book, The Play, in Kennedy’s Briar U spin-off series. He’s first introduced in book two, The Mistake, when the team recruits the reluctant player to fill a gap in one of their lines. As the story unfolds, he becomes something of a mentee to Dean before developing a crush on Dean’s sister, Summer. His role remains relatively minor until The Play hands him the MMC crown.
In the show, however, a prior romance between Hunter and Summer is hinted at as Logan and Tucker try to decode why Dean despises the new defenseman so much. Add Dean’s growing feelings for Allie, plus the bombshell that Hunter is the man she slept with — aka Carter St James — and we could be looking at an unexpected love triangle in season two.
The decision to make Hunter’s role in the show much larger than the books not only serves the drama but could hint at Off Campus expanding further into the spin-off series… or so we hope.

If that face seemed familiar the moment he walked into Malone’s, your instincts were good. Charlie Evans is an actor and musician from Byron Bay, Australia, who moved to Los Angeles at age ten.
He got his start with a recurring role in Everything’s Gonna Be Okay before landing a part in the 2023 Netflix blockbuster Leave the World Behind, playing the son of Julia Roberts’ character.
Most recently, he’s been a series regular on Hulu’s Emmy-nominated thriller Paradise, playing the son of James Marsden’s murdered US president — which, if you’ve been sleeping on it, is your sign to fix that immediately.
