Outer Banks has officially sailed off into the sunset after five epic seasons, weaving together the tender chaos of young love with the far more outlandish adventures of teenage treasure hunters traversing the globe.

While many viewers are still mourning their final farewell to the beloved Kooks and Pogues, there’s plenty of life left in the Outer Banks universe. The show’s creators, Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, have been toying with the idea of a prequel series since long before Outer Banks reached its final chapter.

Set roughly 20 years before the events of the main series, the prequel would explore the roots of Kildare’s entrenched social divide.

According to Deadline, “the prequel only recently came together and entered formal development at Netflix where it has been gaining momentum,” but the project, often referred to as “Kildare“, has been brewing for years.

Jonas Pate first teased the possibility in 2023 and 2024 interviews with Wilmington’s Port City Daily. “We’re working on the script,” Josh Pate said about the prequel in a Deadline interview tied to Outer Banks’ Season 5 release.

“We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”

Here’s everything we know about the Outer Banks prequel so far.

What Will The Plot Of The Outer Banks Prequel Be?

Josh Pate has offered some insight into the prequel’s premise, hinting that the series will trace the roots of Kildare’s most defining divide, a conflict that, he noted, feels particularly timely.

“It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started,” he told Deadline.

Burke added that the story would bring viewers back to familiar faces while also introducing a new generation of characters. She said the prequel will be “seen through the stories of some of the characters you know and some new characters. But they’re 20 years before, so it’s the parents’ generation.”

That timeline could open the door to a deeper look at the families and relationships that have shaped Outer Banks from the very beginning. The prequel will hopefully fill in some of the blanks surrounding how Kildare became so sharply divided in the first place, and perhaps reveal just how far back some of the series’ most tangled family histories really go.

When Will Outer Banks Prequel Be Released?

No release date has been confirmed yet, but with Season 5 of Outer Banks now out, fans can hopefully expect more details about the prequel to trickle through.

Who Is In The Cast For The Outer Banks Prequel?

No cast announcements have been made for the prequel just yet. However, with Burke confirming that the story will be told through the eyes of some familiar characters, the series could feature a mix of Outer Banks favorites and newcomers.
