Can you believe Outer Banks, our beloved YA treasure-hunting drama, has reached its fifth and final season? The Netflix series first premiered in April 2020, just as the world was descending into the strange, suspended reality of COVID-19 lockdowns, and quickly became a comfort watch for viewers around the world.
It also served as a springboard for a new generation of Hollywood talent, including Madelyn Cline, Drew Starkey and Chase Stokes. Now, more than six years later, the Pogues are embarking on their final adventure.
The fifth and final season arrives on Netflix today, Thursday, August 20, bringing John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, Cleo and Rafe together for one last, high-stakes treasure hunt.
For all the heartbreak that comes with the end of an era, fans can at least take solace in knowing that the series was never intended to run indefinitely. Its creators, Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate and Josh Pate, have long said that Outer Banks was conceived from the outset as a five-season story.
“From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship,” the trio wrote in a message shared to the Outer Banks Instagram in November 2024.
“At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away.”

And the Pogues have certainly been left with unfinished business. Season four drew to a devastating close with the death of JJ Maybank, leaving the group shattered as they struggled to reckon with the loss of one of their own. After giving their friend a proper farewell, they buried his body in the Moroccan desert before returning to camp, stunned and heartbroken by the reality of what had happened.
But there is little time for grief to settle. Rafe reveals that Groff plans to sell the crown in Lisbon and urges the Pogues to turn their anguish into action, setting the stage for one final reckoning.
Speaking to marie claire Australia about the loss of Rudy Pankow’s beloved character, Chase Stokes acknowledged the weight of JJ’s absence and the responsibility the remaining cast felt to carry the story forward. “I think we all knew we had a responsibility to fill that void. He’s a beloved character,” Stokes said. “It was really important for us to not let the comedy slip because Rudy was really incredible with that.”
And so, after years of treasure hunts, betrayals, narrow escapes and friendships forged in the crucible of danger, the Pogues are preparing to (hopefully) ride off into the sunset. If you are planning to press play the moment the final season drops, here’s everything you need to know about when the show is dropping on Netflix.

Why Did JJ Leave Outer Banks?
In season four, Rudy Pankow’s JJ Maybank is killed off in the season finale, bringing his time on the series to a tragic end. JJ is fatally stabbed by his biological father, Chandler Groff, while attempting to save Kiara.
Although JJ’s death came as a major shock to viewers, the creators of Outer Banks revealed to Tudum that they always knew JJ was going to die in the series.
“It sets the stage for an epic fifth and final season. We’re planning a story of redemption, and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent,” showrunner Josh Pate explained.
“JJ’s death was a hard but necessary piece of the architecture for the story, and we plan on honoring that as much as we can because we love the character as much as the fans do.”
Is Outer Banks Getting A Prequel?
According to Deadline, Outer Banks showrunners Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke are developing a potential prequel series that would take viewers back two decades before the Pogues’ treasure-hunting adventures began.
The project, which is being referred to as Kildare, has been in the works for some time, with the creators previously teasing the possibility of expanding the Outer Banks universe.
Josh Pate has confirmed that work on the project is underway, telling Deadline, “We’re working on the script,” before adding, “We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”
